Comment:
At age 18, I became a printer for GM based at the Flint Engine Plant thanks to the direction of Joel Lee and working co-op at Universal Electric. At 20, with Viet Nam raging and the draft looming, I enlisted in the navy as a lithographer. Getting drafted with the possibility of dying or enlisting with the chances of working as a lithographer proved successful with 24 months of the enlisted 52 spent operating the printing department at the naval base in Guantanamo Bay Cuba and scuba diving in paradise. After returning to GM with accrued senority, I retired at 48 to go sailing. In 1983, I married Mary Spencer, a speech/language pathologist for the Regional Shiawassee Service District raising a blended family, Karrie (Webster)Brazaski head of nursing for a hospital in Arizona, Jenny (Spencer) Bhaskaran, executive director for ASI Inc. , a company providing assisted living for the disabled throughout Mi., and Toby Webster, living in China, a product manager for a bicycle parts company in Quanzhou. We left Bay City in July 1996, on our 38' steel cutter, Lifes Dream. After sailing through Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, making sure we had sailed all five Great Lakes, we entered the Atlantic Ocean. Cruising the US east coast, Abacos, Cuba, the western Caribbean (Mexico, Belize, Quatemala, Honduras), it was time for a new boat. With our present boat, Still Dreaming, a 47' sloop, we sailed across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and on to Malaysia. Since we had no terra firma, with gray hair starting to turn white, we flew from Still Dreaming in Marmaris Turkey in 2005 to visit friends in New Zealand for two weeks, first week sightseeing and second week buying a home. Sailing was put on hold for a few years to get permanent residency. Now as permanent residents in New Zealand with no visa time limits, we can enjoy our land based home plus sailing and traveling to wherever and whenever. |
